Abstract

RETIRED NUL VETERAN PROFESSORS RELIVE THIER EVENTFUL LIVES IN LESOTHO AND ELSEWHERE

wo famous former professors at the National University of Lesotho (NUL), Professor Sumitra Talukdar and her husband Professor David Ambrose (auguably the person who knows more about Lesotho than anyone in recent memory), recall their adventures in a new book. Here is a brief summary of the book:

LIFE IN THREE WORLDS: REMINISCENCES

2019! THE YEAR IN WHICH THE NUL INNOVATION HUB WILL REACH YOUR DOORSTEPS

It's time to enjoy the fruits of innovation at the National University of Lesotho (NUL). The year 2019 will be remembered as that in which the NUL Innovation Hub (NUL-i- Hub) entered the business space in this country. Hosting 12 businesses, the hub is poised to deliver more than 25 products to the market shelves around the country in 2019.

NUL TRAINED TEACHER KEEPS FROGS AND RATS TO TEACH SCIENCE IN HIGH SCHOOLS

In class, Mphutlane Mositi picks a live frog he has reared and cuts through it with a sharp razer blade to expose a beating heart. In the process, he teaches his students how a real heart operates even as the heart expands and relaxes, pumping blood. It is just one of his live experiments that have made him a darling of students, teachers, parents and school principals.

He happens to be a former Biology and Chemistry student at the National University of Lesotho (NUL). And he is currently employed at Holy Names High School.

FROM TENDERPERNUER TO ENTERPRENUER, NUL TRAINED BUSINESSMAN HAS A GRIP ON SOFT DRINK BUSINESS

Sechaba Makhetha, the National University of Lesotho (NUL) trained entrepreneur is the mastermind behind the famous Phola products. It is the local brand invading soft drink markets.

He has four products in the market as we speak. His thirst-quenching ice-guava is the newest. His purified bottled water refreshes like nothing you have put to test. His nectar-based juice is a repertoire of ten delicious flavours, you just choose. His 100% fruit juice is an array of five fine flavours that keeps you craving more.

NUL AND INTERNATIONAL SCIENTISTS ARE DEVELOPING STONE-BASED TILES

Scientists at the National University of Lesotho (NUL) are working with Italian partners to develop tiles based on stones like the ones shown on the picture. This is the process.

1. Sandstones of Lesotho's molteno formation (the stones called maseru, after which Lesotho's capital city is named) are the most preferable.

2. They are then crushed into individual quartz particles.

3. The partcles are mixed with a specialised binder and taken through a process called vacuumvibrocompression.
