IS YOUR UNIVERSITY AN ELITIST OR AN ENTREPRENEURIAL UNIVERSITY? 10 WAYS TO KNOW

1. It is elitist if its scholars are only of the publish or perish clan……it is entrepreneurial of its scholars are mainly of the innovate or perish clan.2. It is elitist if, when it attempts innovation at all, it focuses almost exclusively on inventions, news things, breakthroughs, earth-shattering things……it is entrepreneurial if it understands that innovation is also about simple but working solutions that can change the life of a man on the street. 3. It is elitist if its lecturers are judged by how tough their subjects are…… it is entrepreneurial if its lecturers are judged by how well they simplify tough subjects.4. It is elitist if is graduates want to work only in their field of study, “I did URP, so I can’t do that,” ……it is entrepreneurial if its graduates explore adventures well beyond their fields of study because, above all things, they learned how to think. 7. It is elitist if, in an attempt to appear relevant, encourages its graduates to be self-employers (those guys who work themselves to death because they will hire no one, those guys who will die with their companies) ……it is entrepreneurial if its graduates create businesses that outgrow and outlive them and hire many people besides them. 8. It is elitist if it is crazy about university rankings, “we are number so and so in Africa,” (holy dung!) while it has hardly changed the life of a man on the nearby shanty town ……It is entrepreneurial if it has the attitude that, “If I can change the life of the man on the street, who cares if I’m no 1 or 5000 in Africa?”9. It is elitist if it emphasizes too much on processes (accreditation, performance management, teaching methods, restructuring, transformation, you name them [N.B. there is nothing wrong with those things] …… it is entrepreneurial if it emphasizes more on vision and motivation of students and teachers, by recognizing their achievements and talents, no matter how little. 10. It is elitist if it is more worried about doing things right, ……it is entrepreneurial if it is more worried about doing the right things.
