It was only last academic year when the Energy Research Centre (ERC) awarded M10,000 to the best performing student in one of the courses in its flagship MSc in Sustainable Energy programme, compliments of Transforming Energy Access – Learning Partnership. Lebitso la letsibolo la rona ke Thato Rateele. Mr. Rateele had performed exceptionally well in the Solar Photovoltaics Course. As the saying goes, “Ntho e monate e ea phetoa”, this year the ERC made it bigger and better. Two courses were chosen this academic year and two students were each awarded M10,000. A whopping M10,000 to spend how you wish!

“I am out of words. I honestly didn’t expect this. I am humbled and thankful to the ERC for the opportunities they present to us. And to my classmates, I wouldn’t have made it without you, this is our victory” said Ausi Palesa Nkaile, a recipient of the award for best performance in Wind Energy course.

Another recipient, the best performer in Energy Planning & Policy course, Ausi Luisa Elena Hoiss went in tears as she received her award. “I’m thankful to everyone for your support. My time here at NUL has been the best ever in school. It’s so sad that I have to leave, I wish I didn’t have to.”

Ho thoe Roma ke ha bo tonki hae thobe, in case you didn’t believe that, now you do.

This event was graced by the presence of the Pro-Vice Chancellor, the Registrar and the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology. In her remarks, the Registrar congratulated the students and encouraged them to work hard. “It brings joy to us to give these awards. If students reach this level of performance, it says that we are doing something right. Congratulations”

The Dean exclaimed that this was the first time he had seen students from Europe studying at NUL. “If not the first programme, we are one of a few that have been able to attract students from Europe. Attracting international students shows that this programme has reached international recognition”
